Ademola Lookman – WSFC Alumni, Professional Footballer

The Journey

Ademola Lookman’s story is one of extraordinary talent, relentless work ethic, and deep community roots. Born and raised in South London, he joined Waterloo Sports & Football Club as a young boy, bringing raw ability and a sharp focus that stood out early. It was here - on local estate pitches and in weekly sessions - that Lookman began honing the skills, confidence, and discipline that would carry him to the world stage.

Reflecting on his formative years, Lookman shared:

"I still miss the cages. The type of player that I am, a 'flairy' player, I feel like not being in an academy I was able to express myself more, and I still do that all the time. It’s the norm to me."

He completed his education at St Thomas the Apostle College in Nunhead, neighboring Peckham, where he became a prefect and excelled academically, achieving five As in his GCSEs.

From Waterloo, he progressed into academy football with Charlton Athletic before signing for Premier League side Everton. His journey then took him through top clubs across Europe, including RB Leipzig, Fulham, Leicester City, and currently Atalanta in Italy’s Serie A.

The Impact

In 2022, Ademola made the decision to represent Nigeria at the senior international level, an honor he embraced with pride. He quickly became a key player for the Super Eagles, helping to lead their charge to the AFCON 2023 Final, and playing with the same tenacity and creativity first seen at Waterloo.

Just over a year later, in May 2024, Ademola delivered one of the standout performances in modern European football history, scoring a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final to guide Atalanta to their first-ever major trophy.

His achievements that year earned him the title of CAF African Footballer of the Year and a national honor in Nigeria, the Member of the Order of the Niger.

His recent accomplishments also led to a nomination for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award—an annual accolade recognizing the best 30 professional footballers worldwide.

The Legacy

Though his footballing career has taken him around the globe, Lookman has never forgotten his beginnings. His continued relationship with Waterloo - returning to support sessions, inviting former coaches like Felix Emanus to major events, and speaking about his roots in interviews - serves as a powerful reminder of what local sport can achieve.

Reflecting on his journey, Lookman offered inspiration to aspiring athletes:

"Don't let your failures weigh you down so they break your wings. Turn your pain into your power and continue to fly."

Ademola Lookman represents everything Waterloo stands for: talent, resilience, and the belief that where you start doesn’t define how far you can go.
